Chickened out already…

Remember the other day when I said I was thinking of going grey?

Well, yeah.

Not gonna happen.

My roots are rather long right now, and I was messing with my hair and pulled it back off my face.

The color of my grey does not go well with my skin tone.

I have come to that conclusion several times over the last few years.

About every 6 months actually.

Guess I keep forgetting.

That’s how we roll in The Chaos

OK, so my friend Antonella gave me these awesome covertible fleece gloves last Christmas in a most fetching green.  Fingerless gloves with the tops off, put the tops on and you’ve got warm mittens.  They even have zippers on the top to hold money, an ID, your bus pass, or a key or two.

I wore them every day when I got them until the weather changed and I didn’t need them anymore.  They were set aside and that was that til the next winter.

Well the next winter is here.  The temps dropped last week and there I was going through all my winter accessories and lo and behold, NO GREEN GLOVES.

I look night after night. Sound familiar? Yeah, I was also looking for my knitting needles.

So The Chaos was torn apart, put back together and torn apart again.

The needles were found, but not the gloves…until last night.

Also found with them were a few other items (from top to bottom as they were pulled out of where they were):

  • two organic face towels that have been earmarked for a special project
  • a large freezer ziplock bag (empty)
  • Ms Cow’s knitted sleeping bag (I was wondering where that was too)
  • the gloves
  • a small ziplock bag containing the leftover yarn from Ms Cow knitted sleeping bag and two sets of dpn’s (which I noticed were missing from the ones I found the other day)
  • a small silk pouch with my best set of zils
  • my favorite veil (used mostly in dance class)

Quite an eclectic collection of items, wouldn’t you say?

Oh, and Donna, where DID you happen to FIND all these items?

They were in a small tote bag sitting innocently next to a shelving unit in my bedroom.  I ummm never bothered to look in it because I thought the whole thing was full of the face towels that were the top layer.

I just so happened to accidentally knock it over as I moved the shelving cabinet to see if my gloves had fallen down behind it.

When BAZINGA all those diverse little goodies spilled onto the floor.

Of all the things I manage to lose in my apartment, I really do miss my sanity the most.

Gah. OK, so the yarn didn’t show up yesterday, but should be here any day. I can live with that…not like I’m going to drop everything and start on Dr Who socks as soon as it shows up. I’ll probably just fondle the balls for a few days and wish for my sanity back as I rub them together.

What I can’t believe I did was mess up my Netflix queue. Two discs of the last special with hottie David Tennant as the Dr. I get the usual shipment notice in the email yesterday. Disc 2 is due to arrive on Wed.

Whuh?!? Disc 2? I haven’t gotten Disc 1 yet. Wtf?

Quick check of the queue shows I put disc 2 before disc 1. Sigh. Going to take a few days of sending Disc 2 back, getting Disc 1 and then adding Disc 2 back to the queue.

Yeah, the “Ins and Outs of being me”.

OK, so I’ve been really busy about the Chaos, at work (this job thing really wears me out – in a good way tho), Kublacon (another year down) and just the daily ins and outs of being me.

Still trying to recover from Kublacon – there are photos to be taken and items to be added to the shop.

Posts to be written about Kublacon, what I’ve been making, the fact that my wrist is recovered enough to knit with small needles again, happenings about town, things seen, Spencer’s doings, etc.

Meanwhile, the latest Knitpicks catalog pops into my mailbox. Damn them, they always seem to arrive when I’m at my weakest…

Anyone else notice the “Time Traveler” self-striping sock yarn? Love the description!

Anyway again….6 balls later…ordered during a particularly weak moment during Kublacon weekend….on their way to be delivered today to the Chaos. I’ve also stocked up my Netflix queue with a bunch of Dr. Who episodes, old and new, so that I may knit away whilst watching. 🙂

I had an idea to knit a neverending scarf, but it will have to be quite thin in order to take advantage of the stripes. I like thickish scarves, so nah. I think I’ll stick to socks. I know of 3 Dr. Who fans who would appreciate a Tom Baker-esque pair of socks and 6 balls is the perfect amount for that. 🙂

Can we get a “Just Right?”

ok…so I decide to cast on for the bag to break up the sock knitting….

Lion Suede is a different gauge than Berroco Suede, so I do a swatch in the stitch pattern, do some calcumacating and voila! I have a number of stitches to cast on.

Cast on and happily knit away…..get it about 5inches long and step back a bit to check out my handiwork. GAH. It looks a bit small. Out comes the measuring tape. Um….5 inches too small. GAHHHHHHHHHHHH.

Next night…another swatch is done…more calcumacating is performed…I come up with another number….hmmmm…I think to myself…I think I did something wrong. I don’t think it’ll be big enough. So I measure the swatch again, calcumacate again…oooh…I must have made an error…I’ll need MORE stitches.

Cast on and happily knit away…get it about 5inches along, step back and admire my calcumacating abilities. OOOH. Wait a minute…this looks a bit too big. Out comes the measuring tape. Um…10 inches too big.

Sigh. Now comes the pleading and begging bit…. I measured wrong, right? If I measure again and again and maybe even again, I’ll get the measurements I was going for in the first place, right? Right? RIGHT?

Ummm….WRONG…and that would be NO. Away goes the knitting.

Next night…OK…I can fix this…reduce stitches down to a resonable size? …only have about 7 more inches of knitting to do….I’ll need to decrease about 50 or so stitches. Good grief, it’ll look ridiculous by the time I’m done.

OK…think…think…think… OOOH. I know! Since I can’t calcumacate worth shit, I’ll measure out how much bag I really need and count up the stitches. Need a multiple of 3 for the stitch pattern… Oooh…lookee! 135 stitches. Perfect.

Yesterday morning as my hair was cooking (I colored it.) – Happily cast on 135 stitches (first attempt was 102 stitches, second was 180 stitches, yeah, I know, you think I would have at least been suspicious), start knitting away….first pattern row….I’m 3 stitches short. Gah…it’s not a multiple of 3…it’s a multiple of 6! DORK ALERT! Knit the last few stitches plain.

Heave a HUGE sigh and go rinse out the color from my hair.

Oooh…Look…no grey hairs!

Ok…feel better. Anywho….add 3 stitches in the plain knit row that is next…next pattern row…perfect! YAY!

Last night….Knit, knit, knitting away…get to about 5inches (for the 3rd time), step back and go…OOOOH…this looks just about right. Out comes the measuring tape…just a wee bit shy of 20 inches. 20 inches is perfect, but what I’ve got is perfectly close enough for me.

Later tonight, I will knit some more on Honey’s socks and then continue to knit on my perfect bag. hee hee. Funny part is…remember when I said I did those calculations again and thought…hmmm…don’t think that’s big enough I’ll add more?

Yeah…it’s the same number I ended up with…

First one was too small…second one was too big…last one is juuuuuuuust riiiiiiiight… I feel like freakin’ Goldilocks.

Lessons learned? Plenty…

Don’t calcumacate past 10pm.

Don’t try to calcumacate with grey hairs…they really mess up your brain.

Don’t doubt yourself.

Use yarn that’s a similar weight in the first place, then you won’t have to go thru any calcumacations at all!

Better yet, have someone else do it for you!!!!
